The significance of Typhoon Haiyan

Sadly the Philippines are often impacted by natural disasters.  A recent Washington Post article counts over 300 disasters in the last 20 years.   This makes the challenge of helping school children even more difficult.  Still, Books for the Barrios continues to succeed in the face of these disasters.

Typhoon Haiyan, however, is a special case.  Because of its size (the strongest storm recorded at landfall), the extent of the devastation is greater.  It is particularly difficult for our educational mission because it has not only destroyed school buildings we support but also caused extensive  water damage to the books and other school supplies we have supplied.

None of this changes the enthusiasm of our teachers or children in the Philippines.  They are used to rebuilding and are well on their way to recovery.  Our partnership means that they will recover faster and continue their progress in implementing a modern curriculum for the children.
